It's what happens to the face in death as muscles and joints droop to points they wouldn't do in life. When my grandmother was just a day or two from death herself, her eyes and face and open mouth already had that unmistakable mask of death. I know this WAS it for her now and it was very emotional when I knew for sure she was going somewhere and never coming back.

Some of these are horrifying, especially the ones with the open and sunken eyes. They almost don’t look real.

I wondered about that. The text says that they died in hospital. I dont understand how the time between them dying and them being taken to the morgue and photographed could be long enough that they'd be that "deflated".
