What was Pompeii? Pompeii was a city of ancient Rome located with Herculaneum and other smaller towns in the Campania region, near the modern city of Naples and around the bay of the same name in the Province of Naples. They were buried by the violent eruption of Vesuvius on August 24 of the 79 d. C. At present, it has 25,751 inhabitants and is part of the Province of Naples. An important area of research focuses on the structures that were being restored during the eruption (presumably damaged in the earthquake of 62 years). Some of the paintings could be damaged old roofing with new fresh and modern instruments are used to analyze the hidden paintings. The most likely reason for which these structures were still being repaired 10 years after the earthquake was the increasing frequency of small earthquakes preceding the eruption. During the excavations, were occasionally found holes in the ash that had contained human remains.  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |

I learned all about that in Latin class in High School. Those aren't actually bodies, they're casts made of ash and such of where the bodies where when they were buried.

I saw an excellent Pompeii exhibit at the Minnesota Science Museum a couple of winters ago. They had a lot of artifacts there along with a lot of remains and castings of remains. I took Latin in high school, so I went there on a Latin trip. |
