The victim was Sérgio Soares Fernandes, 27. He was killed with a violent machete attack on Christmas holyday, in Posto da Mata district.
The crime took place at around 16h10m when Sérgio went to a bar, where he started a fight with José Guedes. After that, witnesses say Sérgio was chased down 200 meteres and then he was hit in the neck with a machete.
Witnesses also state that the victim was crying for help, because the killer was holding the machete. Unable to escape, Sérgio was hit in the neck, he ran a few meters leaving a trail of blood, but did not survive the wound, dropping dead in a while.
The police was dispatched, but after getting to the crime scene, the killer had already escaped. CAEMA police officers breached the bar door, and inside they found the blood stained machete, which had been used to kill Sérgio.
The killer, José Guedes, was known around for being a bully, and occasionaly used his machete to put an end to his brawls. According to the police report, he was a drug addict and had already been arrested for smuggling. Back then he escaped, was later recaptured, and relocated to another detention center. He served six months and then he was released.
According to the victims family, Sérgio did not have any dispute with José Guedes, he always worked, at that time being he was an employee at a timber company. Sérgio left a wife and one year old baby.
The crime left the locals in shock, already scared by a recently occurred murder where a man was killed with multiple shots, near this last occurrence. People now question the police competence, as the only law enforcement vehicle is already under repairs for more than a week.
