Man Commits Suicide with a Chainsaw
This male individual was found deceased, he suffered from depression and had recently borrowed a chainsaw from a friend. A chainsaw was located on the ground. The individual started the machine and then lay down on the ground and placed his neck on the running chains and blade. Fig.1 Left lateral view of the head showing large incised wound to the anterior and left neck. Fig.2 Anterior view of the head. Fig.3 Right lateral view of the head showing large incised wound. There was a large irregular laceration that extended from the left ear diagonally, inferiorly, and medially across the front of the left side of the neck, across the midline to the right side of the jaw. The laceration gaped for a distance of 6 cm (2.3") and measured some 20 cm (7.8") in length. Some vertebrae were visible in the depths of this wound but most of the deep and superficial soft tissue in the region of the laceration was absent and much of the surrounding tissues appeared shredded and macerated. Fig.4 Detail of the wound, anterior. Fig.5 Detail of the wound, right lateral. The use of a chainsaw is a relatively uncommon means of committing suicide. However, chainsaws have been used in homicide and suicide cases involving adults and children, and typically involve the head or neck. Fig.6 VR image of the left anterior lateral view of the skull showing a fracture (with fragmentation) of the inferior aspect of the left mandibular ramus (red arrow). Fig.7 Axial & coronal reconstructions of head and neck showing defect in the posterolateral aspect of the left 1st cervical transverse process within the depths of the skin defect. Postmortem CT showed marked disruption of the soft tissues in the left side of the neck with a fracture of the inferior aspect of the left mandibular ramus (with fragmentation). There was also a defect in the posterolateral aspect of the left 1st cervical transverse process within the depths of the skin defect. - This post is for educational purposes only and is nonprofit.
