Lynne Harper Murder, 1959, and the Wrongful Conviction of Steven Truscott
On the evening of June 9, 1959, 12-year-old Lynne Harper vanished near RCAF Station Clinton in Huron County, Ontario, Canada. She was last seen riding on the bicycle of Steven Truscott, her 14 year old classmate. Two days later, her body was discovered in a nearby woodlot; she had been strangled and raped. Truscott was convicted in September and given a death sentence, making him the youngest Canadian ever sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted, and he spent about ten years in custody before being paroled. The Ontario Court of Appeal acquitted Truscott on August 28, 2007, finding that his conviction was a miscarriage of justice based on an unreliable estimate of the time of death. Ontario awarded him 6.5 million dollars in compensation, although the court said it could not find him factually innocent. The killing remains unsolved, and nobody else has been charged.  ·  ·  · |

In 1968, the Medico-Legal Society in London held a meeting to discuss this case. Attached is the report of the meeting, which included a full body photo of the deceased.
