Jack Burman's "The Dead"

Since the mid-1980′s, Jack Burman has been searching for the dead around the globe. He has been visiting concentration camps, medical laboratories, churches and catacombs to find dead bodies.

Burman’s post-mortem documentation is troubling and at the same time beautiful. Shocking by the intimacy of the images, there are people who can’t look at them for long. For Burman, the work came from a need that he followed. And as he said in an interview at the National Post in 2010, “I’m thinking, when I put the work out, there are people like me who have these needs. It’s clear there are such people. We need some of that. At least some of us do”.

The Dead

Canadian photographer Jack Burman has created a hypnotic collection of still-lifes of long-departed but painstakingly preserved people, specimens and skeletons—dehumanized but very human; flawed but very beautiful. Exquisitely captured, Burman’s post-mortem documentation addresses not only death, but the lives that came before.

The photographs are shocking in their intimacy. With clear respect in their representation, Jack Burman works excruciatingly close to their humanity, and to their death.
Taken from the foreword by Martha Hanna, Director of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.

Pic #7 is touching indeed, I feel like I want to comfort that skeleton and embrace it as warmly as I can. Weird eh?
