It's sort of about religion in ways. The British government of the time needed to have a pro British majority in NI so a large number of protestant Scots were moved there. That is probably the basis for such a large protestant and mostly pro Unionist population. It doesn't follow though that all Roman Catholics are Republicans or that all Protestants are Unionist. There isn't the animosity between Eire, NI and Great Britain as some people seem to think and there are strong ties between the states. Northern Ireland is flourishing now that the Troubles are pretty much over with and NI has a revised Police Service and not a British soldier in sight. The various terrorist groups simply have no place in a modern Irish Republic and NI. Any designs on an all island Ireland would be best achieved through politics and not the gun and bomb. |

I wouldn't deny that Britain (like most European states looking to build empires) has behaved badly in it's past but all the same I think you really need to learn some history. Britain didn't take over half of America at all. People from Britain settled in America (along with lots of people from other countries) and made it home. Those people were British and the then America was part of Britain. Those people finally sought independance and won it. The British government of the time were idiots to run the colony so badly that the population revolted. America would have been quite a jewel! You gonna have a go at the French too? They invaded Ireland and Britain first and divided up the land between their nobles! Most nations are a product of war and Ireland is no exception. You get invaded, taken over and finally integrate (sometimes). I don't disagree that the British do have a bit of an attitude. I guess that stems from the fact that this tiny island nation got in early and once dominated the world with a fifth of the worlds states under it's control. It didn't do it fairly or legally I suspect but then it was about might of arms in those days. The British government of the past was arrogant and empirialistic and certainly treated "peoples" badly. I don't think that is who the Brits are today. |
