Two time World 500cc motorcycle racing champion Barry Sheene's huge crash during free practice at the British GP at Silverstone 1982.

Barry hit Patrick Igoa's bike after the Frenchman had fallen and then Jack Middelburg ploughed into the wreckage. Sheene broke both of his legs and well as suffering many other injuries and retired in 1984.

Daijiro Kato's fatal crash during the opening race of the Moto GP season at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka 2003.

Kato lost control and hit the barriers at around 120mph near the Casio Triangle chicane. He suffered neck, head and chest injuries surviving for two weeks in a coma before succumbing to his injuries.

Tommy Ivo destroying the Sikora Brothers Top Fuel Dragster at the NHRA Winternationals in 1974 at 240mph. He walked away with minor injuries.

Sheene's crash looks shocking. I met him a quite often as a kid in the early 80's when my dad was an FIM steward, and he was a top bloke. I highly recommend the documentary '1976, When Playboys Ruled the World' about him and James hunt. Here's some ropey old pics of Norman Brown and Pete Huber getting killed at Siverstone in 1983. The BBC have full footage of the crash but have never released it. That was unusual back then, they ran Palletti's death for example. I can only assume it was pretty shocking. Note the helmet flying top left.
