Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I've never found any photos or video of Bertrand Fabi's fatal testing accident on 21st February 1986, in his Formula 3 Ralt RT30 - Volkswagen at the Goodwood track, but I have found this newspaper report from the time. Bertrand won the European and the British Formula Ford 2000 Championship in 1985 before moving up to F3 with the West Surrey Racing Team. He was considered a major talent and appeared to be on his way to F1 before this huge accident, hitting the barrier hard at the fast Madgwick corner and turning over his car inflicting fatal injuries. |

Bertrand Fabi. Vehicle #5 Here is a picture of an incident that happened a year before [1985] Canadian pilot who appeared on the international motorsport in the 80s, was considered the greatest promise of this country since Gilles Villeneuve. Raced in Formula Ford 2000 when it survived this accident photo below. Fabi's death left an enormous void in Québec, where he is remembered in various ways. One of the circuit variants built when the Shannonville Motorsports Park located in Shannonville, ON, Canada was extended in 1988 was named as "Circuit Fabi" after him. And in August of 1989 the council of Rock Forest named a street boulevard Bertrand-Fabi. Rock Forest was annexed into Sheerbrook in 2002, and that road was renamed rue Bertrand-Fabi in May of 2006. Another remembrance to him is the Trophée Bertrand-Fabi which every year awards a Québecois driver that showed excellence on national or international level. These are the drivers who were awarded this trophy: |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
We did touch base a little bit on the sad fate of Fabi which was initiated by just that photo above. There are several drivers who appear to have the talent to succeed and be a top driver, those whose chances are taken along with their lives are always the saddest stories imo. Fabi seems to have ticked all the boxes for ability and future prospects. As I mentioned when discussing his fatal crash previously, driving in the UK - even in the south - during February gives credence to the suspicion the crash was caused by a icy patch of tarmac. That era wasn't a good time to be an F3 driver, in a 6 year period I can think of 3 fatalities in the UK, and I know there were others which we've covered that also come into that timeframe in other countries. PS: Must be the off-season - add me to the list of those enjoying the thread from the beginning again |

Sepp Greger's huge crash during the Klagenfurt International airport races in 1960. His Porsche RS60 left the road at speed crashing into parked cars in a spectator area and the aluminium bonnet came through the windscreen severing Sepp's right arm. Greger recovered from his injuries and continued racing...
