Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Attilio Bettega's crash on the 1982 Corsican round of the World Rally Championship in a Group B Lancia 037. Bettega lost control of his Lancia and crashed heavily, he was trapped for some time and received serious leg injuries. He would make a full recovery but tragically crash into a tree at the same rally in 1985, dying instantly in a horrible accident. The '82 accident resulted from clipping a rock on a high-speed section and the car catapulting into a wall on the driver's side. The Lancia's lack of frontal protection resulted in the bulkhead being crushed so heavily the pedal box ended up under the driver's seat. Bettega was trapped in the car, sustaining multiple fractures in both legs. |

Marc Surer's huge crash in a Ford RS200 on the 1986 ADAC Hessen-Rallye which killed his co-driver and friend Michel Wyderand. Marc was badly injured in the accident. Marc took part in 88 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix. He scored a total of 17 championship points with a best finish of fourth. He won the 1979 F2 Championship in a March-BMW. Ari Vatanen crashes into spectators during the 1985 Monte Carlo rally in his works Peugeot 205 T16. No one was seriously injured in this incident and Ari went on to win the event in one of the greatest drives seen at the Monte.

A bit of an excuse to put some pics of the brutish Group B Metro 6R4, this example rallied by Frenchman Didier Auriol. This is from the last round of the French series, the Var Rally, based in Sainte-Maxime in the south of France. Didier had been leading before crashing and ripping off a wheel. He managed to finish 9th and win the Championship. He went on to win the World Rally Championship for Toyota in 1994.

Dirt track racing still has no radios. All we have are what is called a "RaceCeiver", which is just a one way radio from race control. They have started mandating these at a lot of dirt tracks for safety. ALSO, mirrors are illegal in dirt track racing... Just an FYI
