Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A couple of interesting things to note in the second photo, the older guy in the black suit jacket looking sadly at the wreck is Louis Stanley, the owner of the BRM team. Jo Siffert was the only driver ever to die at the wheel of one of his cars.... Also if you look to the right hand side of the image you can see a man holding a black cloth up. This is because just out of shot they are carring Siffert's body on a stretcher up the bank.... Jo siffert won two GP's, the British in 1968 and the Austrian in 1971 as well as being regarded as one of the greatest sportcar drivers in history. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Do I mind? Hell no I dont mind! Thats what my thought was for the thread, for me to get it started and draw in race fans like yourself that has some pics to share as well That way you can download what I post and you need, and I can do the same for stuff you have that I dont The main goal for me was sharing with others, the secondary goal would be to find stuff posted by other members that I dont have Glad to have you on board, post as much and as often as you want, as you already see the thread has no real direction (like by decade) at all, im just posting stuff as I find and organize, so just throw it in there If stuff gets pushed back a page or two big deal, because there is no member that reads this thread that dont know how to work the page finder buttons |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Horrible, just horrible In my worst nightmare I cant even fathom the horror of survivng a crash and having only a broken ankle (not saying a broken ankle is a cake walk) and you are trapped, cant get out and the car is on fire And you are 100% correct, Siffert was an all time great for sure, not one single objection to that statement I havent even seen a single Siffert picture yet in any folder, I know I have some but im not sure if they are just racing shots or of crash or aftermath (if there is only one pic of the crash like you said I either have that one pic, nothing at all, or a rare picture that you can grab from me |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Its only recently that I found that first picture, it would be interesting if you have any others. It's another of those accidents that doesn't have much information or coverage. There were tv cameras there on the day, but only the intense fire afterwards was captured. If you search for it it's easily found on various sites. The fire is frightening. I hope Jo had been knocked out in the impact, or when the car was upside down....

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
I thought it would be nice to add a crash that they walked away from. Team mates Graham Hill and the great Jochen Rindt, both driving for the Lotus team at the Spanish GP 1969. This was the time of the huge rear wings, huge things held by flimsy looking metal supports. Hill crashed first followed a few laps by Rindt at exactly the same place! |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
The first two pictures of the previous post are of Hill, the third is Rindt, note how close he was to leaving the circuit and going in to the spectators area. Originally this guardrail was only a single not double hight. It was the drivers that demanded a double rail....without it there would have been a bloodbath. These further photos show Rindt's wreck and how lucky he was. Just a broken nose... Sadly Rindt would only survive a short time, he died in a crash during practice at the Italian GP 1970. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
It's worth adding that in both cases the drivers rear wings had failed, causing the cars to lose rear down force and spear off the road. These type of rear wings were banded during practise at the next race at Monaco.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
This thread has really got my juices flowing... I'm particularly interested in the drivers who have little or no pictures of moving images of their crash, perhaps not even third party witness information. It's interesting to discuss and find out stories and information people have. Sometimes fans have rare photos or tv coverage that can give new information. There is little known of Bruce McLaren's fatal testing crash in 1970, all I can find is this one haunting photo of tyre marks leading to the disused marshals post at the Goodwood curcuit in the UK. The tail section of his CAN AM car detached sending him off the curcuit. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
This is a rare photo of Eugenio Castellotti's fatal testing crash at the Modena curcuit in 1957, it shows his cars final resting place after leaving the race track landing in a spectator area, thankfully empty at the time. The track was wet at the time, he was ejected from the car and killed instantly. |
