judging by the area where he was killed id say he was mistaken to be a burglar by the owner of that shop or something. or the guard assigned to that place.

i don't think being homeless got anything to do with his being killed. its a business area and maybe when he ducked or bent to prepare his sleeping place, the guard or the owner of that establishment thought he was trying to open the bars to steal the tanks and equipments and was shot for that.
