The muzzle blast did much of the damage. Gases from the rifle barrel are under thousands of psi. Placing the rifle in your mouth ensures you get most of those pressures, much like a bomb going off.

He took a big chance on this one. At that range, with the muzzle velocity and size of the projectile, he could have just poked a hole in the back of his mouth and killed a neighbor. The only way to be sure with a rifle like this is to set it on a barrel at least 3 meters away and aim it for center mass. All of us have seen cases where people tried to go out this way and just ended up spitting out half their teeth and spending the rest of their lives sucking dinner through a straw.
