Hamas Founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin Killed in Gaza Airstrike, March 22, 2004
Sheikh Ahmed Ismail Hassan Yassin, the founder and spiritual leader of Hamas, was killed by an Israeli airstrike at about 5:20 on the morning of Monday, March 22, 2004, as he was being wheeled home from dawn prayers at the mosque near his house in the al-Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City. Helicopter gunships fired three Hellfire missiles at him. Nine other Palestinians were killed and around fifteen people were wounded, two of Yassin's sons among them. Yassin had been quadriplegic since a sporting accident in his teens and used a wheelchair; he was also partially deaf and nearly blind. Israel carried out the strike about a week after the bombings at Ashdod Port, and an earlier attempt on his life had failed in September 2003. Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, who succeeded him as leader in Gaza, was killed the same way weeks later. Two details in the thread do not match the reporting: his sons were wounded rather than killed, and no source attributes his blindness to cataracts. |

Attacking a cripple with apache rockets as he leaves his prayers alongside his son and other civilians. They are capable of only the most heinous of crimes, these animals. |
