Sheikh Ahmed Ismail Hassan Yassin, Hamas's founder and spiritual leader, died in an Israeli airstrike at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Monday, March 22, 2004. He was being taken home in a wheelchair after dawn prayers at the mosque near his home in Gaza City's al-Sabra neighbourhood when helicopter gunships launched three Hellfire missiles. Nine other Palestinians were killed and about fifteen were wounded, including two of Yassin's sons.

Quadriplegic since a sports accident during his teens, Yassin used a wheelchair and was partly deaf and nearly blind. Israel launched the attack roughly a week after the Ashdod Port bombings; an earlier attempt to kill him had failed in September 2003. Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, his successor as Gaza leader, was killed in the same manner weeks later. His sons were wounded, not killed, and no source attributes his blindness to cataracts.
