The casual, even sardonic tone used by the soldier (if indeed he is who he says he is) who posted these is disturbing. I can't help but grieve for the conscience of a human being who has such low regard for human life that the lives he has ended, for whatever reason, have become a punchline to him- the images of their corpses a conversation piece at best- at worst, fodder for ridicule. I have to wonder if such irreverence is feigned- sort of a defense mechanism to deal with the horror of war, like the way people sometimes laugh or make jokes in the face of tragedy, or if the military has successfully brainwashed the individual into believing that the enemy is not truly human and therefore deserving not only of death but hatred, scorn, and disrespect. And then there's the possibility that this individual has always felt this way...that there has always been a desire in this person to end human life and enjoy doing it, particularly if the life in question is brown of skin and alien in thought. But in all this wondering, I myself feel a deep sadness...because whatever the reasoning behind the soldier's attitude, something has been lost- a level of innocence I pray I will never have to lose myself...once you have taken a human life- even in the defense of your country- you have fucked with something inside yourself on a deep, psychological level. That these soldiers put at risk not only their lives, but their very psyches makes their service all the more profound. The soldiers do their jobs and deserve all our gratitude and respect...but I do wonder if more can be done to help them out mentally...not just with PTSD (which often results from witnessing and/or administering all that death in a surreal environment) but with their general outlook on human life- many have had theirs so diminished that suicide and murder (often of their own families) rates are alarmingly high for returning soldiers. No one should ever rejoice in the death of another human being...and now I sound like a complete left-wing, bleeding heart, pansy ***...sorry. I believe sometimes war is necessary, as is the death penalty and other supposedly "justifiable homicides", but I do not believe anyone should ever rejoice in these things. That was someone's baby once...just my two cents. |
