It hadn't occurred to me that the object next to her head was used in the assault. That would seem to require a one handed strangulation if the other hand was being used to push that object in/against her mouth. One handed strangulations are not easy to do as it makes things much easier for the victim to break free unless being pinned against a wall or other fixed object - perhaps the case if she was strangled elsewhere and her body left where it was found. But then why would the killer bring that object along also when transporting the body? It served no purpose once the girl was dead. I am inclined to think that the object had nothing to do with the killing and was just there where she collapsed or was placed, her face coming into contact with it at that time.
