French Commando Killed in the Bulo Marer Raid, Somalia, 2013
On the night of January 11, 2013, French special forces entered Bulo Marer, Lower Shabelle, Somalia, in a bid to rescue Denis Allex, a DGSE intelligence agent held by al-Shabaab since July 2009. The operation was unsuccessful. Two French commandos, at least 17 militants and at least eight civilians were killed. France said Allex was executed by his captors, though al-Shabaab said he survived. The group later published photographs of a dead French soldier.
