It's not so much a component of the soil as it is the actual act of burying them. The most important factor in decomposition time is how much exposure the body has to outside bacteria. Bacteria need oxygen to survive and is usually found in heavy concentrations in water. Which means exposure to air or water will speed up the process of decomposition dramatically and, in contrast, greatly slow the rate of decomposition in bodies found underground, even without embalming |
