I like the photographer's description of events. An education into how awful nature truly can be.

It reminded me of this TERRIBLE footage we watched on the Eden channel. The cameras rolled and aired the whole scene.

A young whale being pursued by sly killer whales (orcas) for a couple of hours at least. They wore him down to exhaustion and started to eat him ALIVE. His mum was there the whole time and they were calling each other in distressed whale song. The mum could not help her calf and the poor soul was killed.

The strange part of it all was only the calf's lower jaw was eaten off - just like the elephant calf in this thread.

Very sad but we cannot do anything about it and we eat meat ourselves. Thank goodness we don't have to do the slaughter. I couldn't unless starving and had no choice

i think that episode was from the bbc nature series called "planet earth." it is an awesome series. btw, the killer whales ate the tongue as well.

Nature could be more brutal than most people can imagine. The ones that scare me are the people who use this to excuse the actions of some "civilized" people.

How horrendous. I can't imagine voluntarily watching an animal being tortured - even if it was in a "natural" setting.
