AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS (ca. 2005): A 23 year old male was found dead in a fixed prone body position in the corner of a staircase. The man’s left leg was outstretched adjacent to the stair-rail, whereas the right leg wedged on another stair-rail. The left hand was found on the corner's wall while the right hand was hanging down loosely. The man’s face was pressed against the wall. There were no signs of foul play. A faint blood streak was found on the wall, beginning approximately 20cm above the mouth.

Investigations revealed that the young man had been out the evening before and had excessively consumed alcohol within a short period of time. He had felt sick and vomited repeatedly. Friends took him back home, where they watched him unlock his house door and entered safely. The next morning, he was found dead as described above.

The man had been healthy and in good physical and mental condition prior to his death. He didn’t have a pre-existing medical condition.

Before the autopsy was conducted, the body showed abrasions and scratch marks on the face.

The autopsy revealed that his blood alcohol concentration was 2.60*g/l, and his urine alcohol concentration was 3.26*g/l. The cause of death was determined to be positional asphyxia after blunt head trauma due to lethal ethanol intoxication.
