I wouldn't know the smell of rotting flesh. I guess it's a normal thing wherever this happened. I think it's alot more than eight days though, unless there were some extreme weather conditions and the grave was that shallow.

In a shallow grave, in a humid, warm environment with a lot of flies and other bugs around, the body *might* go that fast... but that seems still too fast to me.
