27 year old man had apparently been obsessing over his 19 year old cousin for the last several years. He had made multiple advances towards her in recent months, all of which she rejected, which usually backed him off. She complained lightly to her sister and mother, but apparently all three of them decided that he was largely harmless and would eventually go away if she kept backing him off. None of the advances had warranted to police interference in their minds, especially since he was a family member.

Unfortunately, he didn't back off. What he did do was intercept her in some fashion after she'd finished her classes at the local college for the day. Under what the police vaguely referred to as 'deceptive pretenses', he got her to accompany him to a wooded area near the college. He then attempted to rape her, which she resisted forcefully.

According to his confession, he hit her on the side of the head to stun her and then pushed her down and strangled her to death with his hands. The police log indicates (they apprehended him a day later) that she fought fiercely for her life while being strangled and her cousin's body bore several fresh scratches and bruises, especially around his legs. Once he got her on the ground, he apparently knelt down on top of her, just above her midsection, in order to asphyxiate her and she managed to rake him several times with her nails before she finally choked out and expired.

The body was found the same day she was killed, by her family and her dog. They took her dog (named Shadow) out with them when she didn't return home from her classes and discovered the body within an hour.

It was not clear when it began. 'Several' was my word. I would guess it was more like 2 years earlier, when she was 17ish or so, based on the context of the article.
