After the massacre at the Anisio Jobim Penitentiary Complex (Compaj) in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, photographs taken on inmates' phones were leaked to Brazilian media within a day. The violence started at about 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 1, 2017, when Familia do Norte members, allied with Comando Vermelho, assaulted prisoners associated with the rival Sao Paulo-based PCC. It continued for roughly 17 hours and ended on the morning of January 2.

Fifty-six inmates died, many after being decapitated, dismembered or burned. Bodies were piled in the yard, and several were thrown over the perimeter wall, while 112 prisoners escaped amid the disorder. The prison housed 1,224 inmates despite having been built for 592. It was Brazil's worst prison massacre since Carandiru in 1992 and preceded a month of faction-related killings in prisons across Brazil. More than 200 prisoners were subsequently indicted, and jury trials in Amazonas have resulted in convictions.

It used to be that way. Not anymore. In fact, Colombia has de escalated violence in the last 5 years or so. You can ACTUALLY live here. I'm not saying it's Oslo or Vancouver... but i'd say is kind of like Detroit or Moscow.
