The Carandiru Prison Massacre
The Carandiru massacre took place on Friday, October 2, 1992, in Carandiru Penitentiary in São Paulo, Brazil, when military police stormed the facility following a prison riot. The massacre, which left 111 prisoners dead (102 shot by the police; 9 killed by other inmates), is considered a major human rights violation in the history of Brazil. The massacre was triggered by a prisoner revolt within the prison. The prison guards made little effort to negotiate with the prisoners before the Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo stormed the facility, as the prison riot became more difficult for prison guards to control. The resulting casualties were 111 prisoners killed: 102 from gunshots fired by police and nine from stab wounds apparently inflicted by other prisoners before the arrival of the police. None of the sixty-eight police officers were killed. Survivors claimed that the police also fired at inmates who had already surrendered or were trying to hide in their cells. In 2001, Colonel Ubiratan Guimaraes, who led the police action, was sentenced to 632 years in prison for the crime. However, in February 2006 the São Paulo Court of Justice reversed the decision and acquitted Colonel. The 2nd Jury Vara scored for the day January 28, 2013 the trial of another of the defendants accused of participating in the massacre. Commanded by Captain Ronaldo Ribeiro dos Santos, the detachment of 25 men accused of murdering 15 prisoners on the 2nd floor. |

Colonel Ubiratan Guimaraes was killed under unclear circumstances in his São Paulo apartment in 2006. His freedom didn't last long.

Re: The Carandiru Prison Massacre
Seems the Brazilian police like to think they are the law unto themselves. That sort of behaviour doesn't help with trying to keep the public as law abiding citizens. It just makes them want revenge and hate the police.

Re: The Carandiru Prison Massacre
I don't have a problem with the cops/guards shooting them. If you riot, you get whatever comes. I think that they should lock all the door and come back in 30 days to remove those that have starved to death. And shoot any who may have barely survived by cannibalism. Then napalm the criminals' family's dwellings. |
