Cannibal Holocaust's Impalement Scene: A Movie Effect, Not Real
The apparent impalement was staged for Ruggero Deodato's 1980 Italian film Cannibal Holocaust, not an actual killing. The actress was seated on a bicycle saddle fixed to the pole and held a small piece of balsa wood in her mouth. A wider version of the shot includes a documentary-crew character from the film standing next to her with a movie camera. Because the effect appeared so realistic, Italian authorities seized the film and prosecuted Deodato over allegations that it was a snuff film; he showed the court how the rig worked to establish that the scene had been faked. |
