That may very well be the top of his skull, or at least the dura mater that's supposed to insulate the brain against lesser concussive shocks. I vote for skull, though, because the dura mater we passed around in neuropsych class was more of a dark brownish color (but that may have just been because it had been preserved), and because that's the only way his scalp would have deflated in such a manner.
