i read in a vietnam war book one time and thought that damages like that can be caused by "bouncing betties"... a mine that bounces up when you stepped on it and explodes sideways at lower leg / knee level.. not usually killing people but effectively putting the person out of the running.

Bouncing Betty typically exploded at a mans waist height, which would have put it at his upper abdomen/chest/head area so it wasn't that.

I don't think it was a landmine, usually a mine blast blows apart one foot then the blast wave travels up the bone pushing the flesh away from it, all the way up to the hip.

Landlines don't usually take off both legs in the middle of the shin area
