i think that fatality would only happen in steel rims that are bolted and welded together. just my assumption though that such will not happen in magnesium wheel rims (the shrapnel effect). but in a wheel that big, even the rubber particles are enough to crack your head open.

Some truck and tractor tires are held onto the rim with a steel ring.

Re: Blew His Brains Out After Overinflating Tractor Tyre

It's pretty easy to do.........I have a 1926 Studebaker roadster, and I wanted to air up the tires to move it. I attached a tire pressure pump, and set it for 35 psi shutoff. It was slow, as it was tiny, so I went off to do something else. I assumed the shutoff would just stop when it got there. Then I would put it on the next tire, and so on, until they were all pumped up enough to move the car.
Well, the tire pump was Chinese, and the shutoff failed. When I went back to check on it, it was still running, and the pressure was at 110 psi!. Studebakers used split rims, and if it had let go, I would have been dead. The tire rubber had actually split the sidewall all the way around. I turned off the pump, and let the thing bleed down slowly, while I went away, waiting for the boom.
That is just one more stupid thing that i survived. I have never done anything like that again. Thank God that Studebaker built their wheels very heavily, and the split rims were no exception.
Usually split rims catch people right in the forehead, and if they survive (which is rare) they are lobotomized, and pretty much just exist for the rest of their lives, without being able to do anything except eat and poop. I believe "60 Minutes" did a episode on split rim truck tires, and shortly after that, they were banned from use on commercial trucks. I think some old ones are still around, as are many on antique cars.

Some spell it "tyre", others say "tire" I still don't know which one is right
The outer portion of a wheel. In Canada, as in the U.S., Tire is the older spelling, but both were used in the 15th and 16th centuries (for a metal tire).

Tire became the settled spelling in the 17th century but tyre was revived in the UK in the 19th century for rubber / pneumatic tyres, possibly because it was used in some patent documents.

Tractor Tyre.
That's the first time I have ever seen tire spelt that way.
Some spell it "tyre", others say "tire" I still don't know which one is right
Tire is the North American spelling of Tyre, which is used pretty much everywhere else.
