Problem is that even as ponderous as it is right now, the legal system here in the US still makes mistakes. Every year innocent people are exonerated by independently-obtained DNA evidence. Speeding the process up at all, let alone as significantly as this level of 'mob justice' may result in vengeance-seeking family members of the victims feeling their bloodlust sated....but it will also result in FAR more innocents being slaughtered. Just as a hypothetical, even in a case like this where the guy was caught 'red-handed.' Who caught him? The girl's father. Anyone else see it? Witness it? What if the girl's father had lost five grand to the guy at the poker table the night before? Was there a past history between the two men? A history of misbehavior from the alleged perpetrator? We'll never know because there was no investigation. No trial. No lawyers. Only immediate sating of the bloodlust of a thirsty mob with an interest in revenge and carnage rather than any true 'justice.' |

That's why none of it will ever happen. It's just wishful thinking that if one commits murder, their punishment should be losing their life. Having them beat to a pulp is just the icing on the cake.  Having worked for the court system, I can honestly say at times, our legal system is a joke. The wheels of justice for the victims do spin s-l-o-w-l-y, and sometimes not at all. Victims of crime want quick punishment for the bad guys, and that rarely happens here. Anyway, if the dude was actually doing what the townsfolk caught him doing, then I have no pity for him. |
