15 sept 2009 The incident that left two people dead and six others wounded in front of a recycling center located inside a garbage dump in the village of Catiri in Bangu, West Zone of Rio, on the morning of Tuesday, day 15 .
At least 8 garbage collectors were throwing a grenade from hand to hand when it fell to the ground and exploded.
Agents of the bomb squad of the Coordinator of Special Features said that the shrapnel had a range of more than 20 meters.
The marks were visible on the roof and the wall of the establishment.
Carlos Eduardo da Silva Chaves, 25, and James Lima Costa, 23, died on the spot.
Alexandre Ribeiro, 32, who suffered lacerations on his left leg fracture and was taken to the State Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Realengo.
Three other injured were taken to the Rocha Faria State Hospital in Campo Grande, also in the West Zone: Ari Guedes P, Edson Carlos Couto da Silva and Felipe Pereira was hit by shrapnel and released after receiving medical attention.
The seventh victim, Alexander Lima da Silva, had burns, bruises and fractures and was taken to General Hospital Bonsucesso in the neighborhood of the same name, in the north, where he remained under observation until early evening.
The 8th victim was identified as Alex Couto da Silva, brother of Edson da Silva Couto.
