Jeffrey MacDonald, a former U.S. Army officer and physician, became a figure of national notoriety following the murder of his family in 1970 and the subsequent legal proceedings that spanned decades. MacDonald was convicted in 1979 for the murders of his pregnant wife, Colette, and their two young daughters, Kimberley and Kristen, at their home on Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On February 17, 1970, MacDonald called for emergency assistance, reporting a stabbing at his home. Responding military police found Colette, Kimberley, and Kristen brutally murdered. MacDonald, who was also injured, claimed that four drug-crazed intruders, three men and one woman, had attacked his family and himself. Despite initial hearings by the Army, which resulted in a recommendation not to charge MacDonald, the case was later taken up by civilian authorities. After a long delay, partly due to legal challenges and MacDonald's release from the military, he was tried and found guilty in 1979 of the murders.

The trial was highly publicized, with the prosecution arguing that MacDonald had staged the crime scene to cover up his culpability. The defense maintained MacDonald's innocence, suggesting that the crime scene had been contaminated and mishandled by the military police.

Jeffrey MacDonald's case has been a subject of controversy and debate, with numerous appeals and requests for a new trial based on claims of new evidence and allegations of prosecutorial misconduct. However, his convictions have been upheld.
