This picture was taken on Avenida Chapultepec and Calle de Monterrey in Colonia Roma. The dead Lady was a very famous journalist who wrote some really good books. That day she had a book-release party and was on her way there. She was all made up, going to pick up her sister to go to the event. Crossing the street, two cars crashed and then ran her over. This picture is great because she has all her makeup on and she just doesn’t look dead even though she is.

Her name was Adela Legarreta Rivas, she was struck by a white Datsun on 29th April, 1979.

The photographer is called Enrique Metinides who was renowned for taking pictures of crime and/or death scenes in Mexico, where this happened. He's interesting because he was probably the original gore hound and took his first published pic at age 12. His interest was with the imagery of disaster and destruction, whether as the result of bad luck, human violence, or divine retribution. His subjects, all witnessed in or around his native Mexico City, include infernos, floods, aeroplane crashes, car crashes, train crashes, bus crashes, murders, accidents and suicides.

Metinides began his career shooting photos of crime and disaster for La Prensa. Over the course of his life, he shot thousands of photos and was published in as La Prensa, Alarma and Crimen. He is sometimes compared to the American photographer Weegee for his stark depictions of harsh realities of urban life. His work has been shown in numerous galleries, including La Casa de América, Madrid, Spain; Central de Arte Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico; The Photographers Gallery, London, United Kingdom and the Anton Kern Gallery, New York. He currently lives and works in Mexico City.

Wounded Marine Returns Home to Wed

Ty Ziegel (born in 1982) is a United States Marine Corps Sergeant who was seriously injured while serving in Iraq. During his second tour in Iraq in 2004, his group was attacked by a suicide bomber. Mr. Ziegel had been trapped in a burning truck, the heat melted the flesh from his face. He sustained massive injuries, but survived. After returning to the United States, he spent 18 months in Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas.

His injuries led to the loss of his left forearm and of three fingers of his right hand, and Ty was rendered blind in his right eye. He also sustained widespread severe burns that led to the loss of his ears and much of the tissue on his face. His shattered skull was replaced by a plastic dome, and a face was constructed more or less from scratch with salvaged tissue, holes left where his ears and nose had been. Despite the range and severity of his injuries, and after over 50 operations, Ty had recovered enough to leave the hospital.

Ty married his girlfriend Renee Kline in 2006. They live together in Illinois. Nina Berman's wedding portrait of Ty and Renee, Wounded Marine Returns Home to Wed won the World Press Photo competition for portraiture in 2007. The World Press Photo competition is widely regarded as the most prestigious international award for photojournalism.
