Soviet-Made Tank Graveyards in Afghanistan: Kabul and Other Sites, 2000s
Soviet-made tanks and other armored vehicles stand on the grounds of the Kabul Military Training Center, a few kilometers east of Kabul. The site is associated with decades of conflict in Afghanistan, including the Soviet war from December 1979 to February 1989. Photographs from the 2000s show rows of mostly T-54/55-type tanks, along with a BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle, a towed howitzer and BRDM-2 scout cars. Soldiers and civilian visitors pose beside some of the weathered vehicles, several of which have been stripped or covered with graffiti. Aerial views show hundreds of vehicles arranged in rows beneath bare mountains. Other scenes were taken at separate locations, including a tank in snow and another on a village street. |
