Mauthausen Concentration Camp Liberation, Austria, May 5, 1945
Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz, Austria, was the center of an extensive Nazi camp and forced-labor system. About 190,000 people were imprisoned across the complex, and memorial authorities estimate that at least 90,000 died. More than 11,000 deaths occurred in April 1945 alone. The U.S. Army reached Mauthausen and Gusen on May 5, 1945. Period photographs show prisoners assembled on the Appellplatz, the Todesstiege stone stairway, the Wiener Graben quarry, the gas chamber and the crematorium. Other scenes record cheering survivors greeting American forces and Austrian civilians digging mass graves on the former SS soccer field under U.S. guard. The collection also includes post-liberation memorial markers, a Soviet honor guard, scenes from the Lenzing and Melk subcamps, a postwar displaced-persons camp in Linz, a 1946 trial and modern views of the Mauthausen memorial site. Pfft!! You're making it sound like I can use a camera safely!! Nope, they aint mine. But my job for the weekend is to get mine sorted out. Then you can laugh and go "why the fuck did you take a picture of a wasp on the ground when you're stood in front of a gas chamber?" And my response will be "until it's been proved it's a gas chamber the wasp is also quite interesting" |
