LONDON: An Indian student who had only arrived in Britain a month ago is in hospital in serious condition after being nearly stabbed to death in a Hyderabad biryani restaurant in East London where she was working as a part-time waitress.

Sona Biju, an Indian national from Kerala (22) who arrived in London in February to do a master’s at the University of East London, was viciously stabbed in broad daylight with a knife by a man who was posing as a customer, who she was serving at the Hyderabad Wala restaurant in East Ham last Friday.

The restaurant specialises in biryani and Hyderabadi cuisine. After finishing his meal at around 2.20 pm, when she went to his table, the man suddenly grabbed her, pulled her towards him, pulled out a knife and stabbed her multiple times, continuing to do so as she fell to the floor. CCTV footage shows him threatening staff and customers who try to stop him.

Sriram Ambarla (23), of no fixed address, an Indian national from Hyderabad, was charged with attempted murder on Sunday as part of the investigation into the stabbing. He appeared at Thames magistrates’ court in East London on Monday and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on April 25.

A metropolitan police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 14.22 hours (2.22 pm local time) on Friday, March 25, to a report of a stabbing on Barking Road. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and found a woman, aged in her early 20s, with stab injuries. She was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious, but stable, condition.”

The London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We sent two ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched London’s air ambulance. We treated a patient at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

The University of East London said in a statement: “The university is aware of an incident on Friday 25 March involving two students at the Hyderabad Wala restaurant. We are providing support to those involved and cooperating with the metropolitan police.”

This stabbing comes six days after British Indian student Sabita Thanwani (19), an undergraduate at City, University of London, was stabbed to death in her university hall of residence on March 19.
