Sexual Predator Attacks 13 Yo Girl Inside Her Home # Update

San Jose police are searching for a suspect who allegedly followed a 13-year-girl home from school and attacked her.

The middle school student first noticed the man when he approached her on the front porch of her home in the 4000 block of Rio Vista Avenue Tuesday and told her he was lost. He asked her name and age and then started asking inappropriate questions.

"That's when I decided to run inside the house because I'd already unlocked it," she said. "And I tried to slam the door on him but I couldn't, so he gets inside."

The suspect forced his way through the front door of her home and grabbed her while she struggled and fought back.

"He walked a few steps towards me and I thought he was going to grab me again," she said. But he just turns around, looks out the door, and just walks away."

The girl then locked the door after he left, hid in a closet and texted her father: "DADDY COME HOME NOW. SOME GUY TRIED TO RAPE ME."

The terrifying attack was caught on the family's home surveillance system.

"The guy starts a conversation with her and when she opens up the door, the suspect pushes her in, tries to sexually assault her as well.

The little girl is brave, she fights back, and the guy leaves on foot," San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said. "He's not concerned about being caught, since he's doing this in broad daylight."

On April 2, the same suspect is believed to have followed a 28-year-old woman into a public restroom at Mitsuwa Marketplace, a Japanese grocery store at 675 Saratoga Avenue.

He attempted to sexually assault the woman in the restroom and fled before police arrived.

Police released surveillance photos of the man from both locations.

He is described as a white man about 30 years old with a medium height, a thin build and a beard. When he followed the teen girl home from school, he was wearing a black beanie, a blue long-sleeved button-down shirt, light-colored cargo shorts and a dark messenger bag. Investigators suspect he may have been riding a light-blue 10-speed bicycle as well.

"We need to put a stop to this immediately. We're really concerned that he's going to strike again and we need the public's help," Garcia said.

The suspect remains at large.

AN JOSE -- A man caught on surveillance videos trying to molest a woman in a bathroom and following a 13-year-old girl into her house was charged Tuesday with crimes that could put him in prison for life.

The four felony charges filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court against Mohammad Khaliqi, 31, are attempted sexual assault during the commission of a burglary, two counts of false imprisonment and assault with intent to commit a felony.

Khaliqi remained in custody Tuesday, where he has been since his arrest last week, and is being held without bail.

"Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the San Jose police and Santa Clara County sheriffs as well as members of the community, a predator is off the streets of San Jose," prosecutor Bret Wasley said outside the courthouse.

Wasley said the fact that Khaliqi didn't succeed in sexually assaulting either victim because they fought back doesn't minimize the danger he poses to society.

"He is acting on impulse and grabbing random strangers," he said. "This is a terrifying case."

Wasley revealed that Khaliqi was caught after a San Jose resident who rented him a room recognized his photo from news reports and called police, allowing them to trail him to a relative's house in San Leandro where he was arrested May 8.

Khaliqi is accused of following a 13-year-old girl May 5 on her walk home from school and forcing his way into her home, San Jose police said.

A surveillance video of the incident showed Khaliqi speaking to her as she attempted to unlock her front door. When she finally opened the door, Khaliqi shoved her inside and up against a wall. The teen fought back and Khaliqi fled the home, police said.

Prosecutors also allege that Khaliqi is the same man who followed a 28-year-old woman into a public restroom in early April at Mitsuwa Market at Saratoga and Moorpark avenues in an attempt to sexually assault her, according to police. That woman also fought back and the incident also was caught on video.

After police had posted the video of the attack on the 13-year-old, Khaliqi altered his appearance by shaving his head and beard, Wasley said. He lived within walking distance from where both crimes occurred.
