A former North Ridgeville City Schools teacher, who previously pleaded guilty to charges related to a situation involving her ex-boyfriend, has been sentenced in Cuyahoga County Court in a hearing that took a dramatic twist when the judge clashed with her defense attorney.

Hannah Freeman, 27, who was a fourth-grade teacher at Ranger High-Tech Academy, was sentenced Thursday by Judge David Matia to seven days in the Cuyahoga County jail and 18 months of community control.

Her sentence came after Freeman pleaded guilty in June to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, obstructing official business and possessing criminal tools.

“This is frankly a bizzarro breakup between two professionals," said Judge Matia during the sentencing hearing. "The pre-sentence investigation does not paint a pretty picture of your behavior, Ms. Freeman. You should’ve known that it was over. It was my understanding the victim had someone else in his life.”

As part of her sentence, Freeman was ordered to have no contact with the victim, wear a GPS device for the first 90 days while on house arrest with work release and receive mental health counseling to establish “healthy boundaries.”

On November 6, 2024, her ex-boyfriend reported that Freeman entered his unlocked vehicle and stole two backpacks containing two computers and his wallet, with the items valued at approximately $1,100.

The victim stated that Freeman had been showing up unexpectedly at his home, his parents' home, and his workplace (Lee Burneson Middle School in Westlake) for approximately six months, causing stress and mental anguish.

Police used Flock cameras to track Freeman’s vehicle at the victim’s workplace at least 33 times over 19 days in one month.

On November 7, 2024, the ex-boyfriend reported that Freeman followed him to his job and was found inside his vehicle.

When police arrived, Freeman was in her own vehicle and claimed she was invited there, which the victim denied.

Freeman was initially charged with felony counts, including menacing by stalking, burglary, theft, identity fraud, and theft of drugs.

As a lawyer, I'm really disappointed with the judge's ruling. Probation, house arrest and psych eval was enough. But i guess what they say, can't do the time, don't do the crime.
