Cop's Helmet-mounted Camera Captures Car Crash

Forest Grove, OR - Forest Grove Police Officer Troy Maslen's helmet-mounted camera captured more than might be expected on a routine traffic stop July 14.

Video from the stop shows Maslen talking to the driver he pulled over before a loud crash causes him to jerk his head – and camera – toward the nearby intersection of 19th Avenue and Hawthorne Street.

Coincidentally, Maslen had ended up at the scene of a car crash as it happened, with camera rolling. Forest Grove Police Captain Mike Herb said this case demonstrates the enormous power of body-mounted police cameras for keeping both police and civilians accountable.

In the video, a white car traveling north on Hawthorne Street is struck by an eastbound vehicle traveling on 19th Avenue through the intersection.

The traffic light on Hawthorne Street appears to be about halfway through a red light cycle, Herb said, though both drivers insisted their lights were green.

Maslen can be heard calling for medical assistance on his radio after seeing the crash, though it takes him a few tries to get airtime on the channel the department shares with other agencies.

Immediately after the video cuts out – an edit Herb said he made to protect the identities of the people involved in the crash – Maslen finishes with the driver he pulled over and runs to the crash scene, Herb said.

HELLLOOO... friggin cop just stares at the crash scene in aww... Moron.. The other person in the accident responds with more enthusiasm than this fool. He should have run to the scene as soon as he saw it happen.

No, he responds appropriately. He immediately went over radio to get an ambulance, then returned the driver's papers. Then, if you read the description, he ran over to the accident. He did exactly what he should have done.

Sorry but THAT wasn't "immediately" It took him 18 - 20 seconds to call it in... fucksakes he was STILL standing there after 30 seconds...

He immediately radios in and waits for response; as soon as you hear dispatch, he details what happens.

He also waits and assess the situation; in any accident situation, the first thing you do is make sure "Is it safe to approach?". You don't just run blindly in. That's all heroic and Hollywood, but it'll also get you killed should the vehicle decide to go boom.
