Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him

survives Vietnam to be shot down back home . killing of America right there folks.
Its not like the cop meant to shoot the man, the officer believed he was in danger of his well being, he followed proper procedure and discharged his weapon, because the man refused to halt and had what looked like a shotgun... You can't blame the cop, it was almost like a freak accident... I love the guys who cry "police brutality" they've obviously never been on a ride along, or have seen what cops deal with on a daily basis.

tl;dr: cop didn't shoot the man randomly, he did what he thought was self defense, it was a freak occurance

Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him

That was sad. Young cop made a snap decision based on what he thought he saw, but was proven wrong. You can hear he immediately regretted what happened; I don't think he's the kind of cop that will need to be stripped of his badge and gun for what happened. Can't fake that kind of remorse, and knowing what cops go through, I can't exactly blame him. There was a cop who was shot with an automatic rifle by some old crazy bastard a couple of years ago, and that cop gave him the benefit of the doubt... and died for it.

Here's hoping the old fellow that was shot lived.
i have a burning hate for cops but i will have to agree with you that looked alot like a gun

Luckily, the old fellow survived. Sometimes, mistakes are forgiven.

Perhaps not. In fact, most probably not, since now he's screwed up mistaking a cane for a rifle, the next time, I might mistake a rifle for a cane and wind up dead.

Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him

People have a lot of interpretation about this issue but here is my take. Case in point this video. Clearly the old man was reaching for something which scared the shit out of the cop but if you were to assess the threat as too how wobbly the guy was, it would take some time for him to grab a weapon if there ever was one and he would be ready for it. Everyone was saying why did the guy step out? In the old days, even in old movies, people got out of their cars and talked to the cops like gentlemen. The line "please step out of the car ma'am" resonates in my mind. ^_^ I was thinking this old man was probably in the same frame of mind. He never got the memo that in this day and age, you sat in the car and put your hand on the wheel at all times. Plus there are vests now for God's sake. Good thing he didn't die.

You don't give a fuck if the old man survived or not. All that matters to you is your cop buddy gets hit with no more than a suspension with pay.

Cops can do no wrong. They are perfect like Jesus of Nazareth.

Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him

Police culture thinks of the citizenry as enemies. Why would they always say, "You did what you had to do." say to a cop who mistakenly shoots someone or a dog. What they have evolved to right now goes against their creed that reads "As an LEO, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property, to protect the innocent against deception, the ‐weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality, and justice. I‐will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all, maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn, or ridicule; develop self‐restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others." This is the kind of police they should be no matter how times change. Is there something between the lines that conveys an LEO's self-preservation comes first? How can they serve and protect people when most of them automatically think of their safety first? How can they serve when they think of people with as bad guys like inmates are to jailers?
