There was definitely a better and safer way to handle this situation. Tazing his is the first thing I would have done if I was one of the cops. Shooting someone with a knife when they have shown no aggression towards you seems a bit overkill.

You're assuming that they had better less lethal equipment. You'd be suprised how many police departments (even big ones) still don't have the modern tools available. Those Tasers are right around $700 to $900 each, not including training and ancillary equipment. With some agencies it's costs and with others, it's institutional culture.

Everyone gets all spazed out when cops shoot someone who has a club or a knife and they don't understand why the cops couldn't just shoot his arm, or Tase him, or use pepper spray him, or hit him with a bean bag round, or just bum rush him, and on and on. Well, the simple answer is that cops don't really train for that. We train to stop the threat...not shoot to kill, but stop the threat...period. If stopping the threat is accomplished by using less lethal weapons, then great...the threat is stopped. If a less lethal option is available and at hand and there's time, then we'll use it...if not, then we stop the threat. It might sound harsh to those not familiar with police work, but if it weren't for the news media whining on and on, and lawyers filing law suits at the drop of a hat...we wouldn't even have less lethal options. It's far easier to just hit or shoot someone and be done with it than using less lethal weapons and taking a chance on whether they'll work or not. Don't forget less lethal weapons don't always work on everyone. Sometimes they make the situation far worse from a tactical standpoint. In the case of this video, it looks like a bean bag round would have been an effective tool. The problem is that it's a total judgement call on the part of the officers on scene.

There's an interesting and informative training video at, www.liveleak.com/view?I=2d8_1367104934, that shows just how dangerous club or knife wielding bad guy can be. This video or one like it has been used to training virtually every cop in the US and Canada over the past 40 years. This video might let some of you see just how dangerous and unpredictable police work can be. Every officers goal is to come home alive at the end of the workday. By the way, this video shows master trainer Dan Insosanto who trained me way beck in the very early 1980's.

Re: 18-year-old Wielding a Knife on an Empty Streetcar Shot & Killed by Cops

Why don't cops ever fire warning shots when confronted with idiot or drugged up suspects armed with only a knife or small weapons that aren't firearms? I'll bet 9 times out of 10 once the suspect hears that boomstick he'll drop the weapon and just give up. But noooo. The cops always just blow the fool away.

Well...there's that whole liability thing. When something (like a bullet) goes up, it must come down. No police agency in the US allows warning shots. I'm sure you're correct that the bad guy will more than likely stop doing whatever activity he doing and comply. The issue is what would citizens (especially the idiots in the media) say if that warning shot hit someone or something. The only law enforcement agencies I've ever heard of firing warning shots are correctional agencies and the military in certain circumstances. It sounds like a good idea, but it isn't really feasible.

I only watched it once and I totally missed the Tase. It shows a progressive use of force, but I never thought shooting him outright was that bad of an idea in the first place. I think he had it coming, Taser, bean bag, or not.

You'd lose that bet...many people have been shot multiple times and continue on long enough to kill someone else, even with a knife. There are very few places on the human body that will drop someone dead on the spot, and all of them are very hard to hit with handgun especially, let alone a handgun under stress. Now, that should explain why some people have been shot 8 times and lived...none of the 8 rounds hit vital organs like the heart, or the central nervous system.

No police agency in the world trains officers to fire at the limbs such as arms or legs, everything is center mass (draw a big upside-down triangle on your chest...that's center mass).

I'm not just blindly defending cops, but most of you on here don't even remotely have a clue about firearms and how to use them. This shit ain't the movies where the police are calm and every shot lands in the perfect spot every time, that's fake as it gets...this is real-life. Learn the difference before posting in a thread involving firearms people.
