Re: 18-year-old Wielding a Knife on an Empty Streetcar Shot & Killed by Cops

I don't see a problem here. Multiple requests to drop the knife. Perp taunts the police, calling them pussies, and refuses to put down weapon. Cops first first three shots. Perp likely drops, but as long as he still has a knife in his hand and is waving it around, he is still armed and dangerous. Cops shoot until he no longer moves.

So? One less stupid punk in the world. Good riddance.

"Use of deadly force" is often granted to police forces when the person or persons in question are believed to be an immediate danger to people around them.

For example, an armed man in a shopping mall shooting at civilians without regard to the safety of anyone around him, and refusing or being unwilling to negotiate, would warrant usage of deadly force, as a means to prevent further danger to the community.

The use of deadly force is also authorized when a person poses a significant threat to a law enforcement officer, usually when the officer is at risk of serious bodily injury or death.

In the United States this is governed by Tennessee v. Garner, which said that "deadly force...may not be used unless necessary to prevent the escape and the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others."

This case established the Fleeing felon rule exception to the use of deadly force. Under this exception, if a police officer establishes probable cause that an individual escaping poses a serious threat of death or significant harm to the officer or others, the officer can use deadly force.
Didn't see any attempt to flee or coming forward to harm cops or others as he just stays on the bus.
Not too mention after 3 shots he's down so certainly not gonna flee then but they still thought it was a good idea to empty the entire clip in him.

tasering him would be efficient enough me thinks.

Re: 18-year-old Wielding a Knife on an Empty Streetcar Shot & Killed by Cops

... I am failing to see how the real problem here is the police.... Did he deserve to die? IDK... I wasn't there... but the whole part of the story on why a 18 year old is holding a knife on a evacuated/empty street car would help deter-mend how serious of a situation this was... Obviously he did something to make the driver and anyone else on the street car leave... maybe he said he had a gun, maybe he said he had a bomb, maybe he said he wanted to die and take people with him... who knows.... but I like how in situations like this, the reason how the story got here doesn't matter, all that matters is kid is dead and the police are automatically the evil doers .....

Re: 18-year-old Wielding a Knife on an Empty Streetcar Shot & Killed by Cops

From Wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Sammy_Yatim

On the night of July 27, Sammy Yatim boarded a Dundas streetcar. Sometime afterwards, he drew his knife and told passengers to remain on the streetcar, reportedly acting aggressively towards other passengers. Fearing for their lives, the passengers promptly tried to escape. Yatim then revised his demands, ordering everyone off the streetcar. He began to approach the driver of the vehicle but stopped to shout obscenities at the crowd gathering outside. The driver of the streetcar remained at the controls until shortly before police arrived.
Passenger and witness Aaron Li-Hill said that upon boarding the streetcar he initially noticed Yatim sitting at the back, across from a group of teenage girls. He later heard giggling from the back of the streetcar followed by a scream, then saw Yatim brandishing a knife as the girls ran past him toward the front doors. According to witness Jessica Doyle, another passenger on the streetcar, Yatim seemed irate, mentally unstable, and oblivious to her presence as he walked directly past her aboard the streetcar.Doyle reported that as he walked past her, Yatim was holding his exposed genitals in his left hand and a knife in his right hand.According to Melody Garcia, another passenger, Yatim "took his penis out with one hand and a knife in another, threatening four girls and all the lives of people on that bus."
Police arrived at the scene. At the front of the vehicle, Constable James Forcillo of the Toronto Police Service called for a Taser multiple times, believing the situation "could be contained". According to videos of the incident, police asked Yatim to drop the knife and warned him not to "take one step in this direction". Nine shots were subsequently fired by police; three initially, followed by an additional six about five seconds later. Approximately 30 seconds later, a Taser was deployed on Yatim by a second officer.
It was later determined that eight of the nine shots fired hit Yatim.

..... appears they charged the Officer that fired the shots with murder... so that should make some people happy.

If that cop had any aiming skill at all he would've only needed to fire one round.

Oh well, probably shouldn't wave a knife at the police then.
