Explosions, even small ones (which that seemed pretty big), create a lot of force. Especially if they are inside something. I have seen military videos of shrapnel flying hundreds of yards no problem.

When I was in the Marine Corps it was not uncommon to get stung a few times every once and a while on the grenade range...live grenade practice was happening well over 100 yards away and small pieces of metal would still make their way too you (luckily leaving nothing more than a small bruise or cut)
