Obviously a break in the pipe. That rat came DOWN the soil stack, not up. It just had to navigate the U-bend.

not too sure about that- after the u-trap, the pipes would only be partially filled(aside from brief moments when a toilet is flushed), so a rat should be able to navigate a long way through them, from a main pipe. the gases in there would be god awful though

It's not a broken pipe, They climb up through the pipes all the time in major cities.

Fill the bowl with some liquid drano when you leave for the day, they are won't try your toilet after that.
