"The foster mother of a 10-year-old boy is angry and depressed by his mysterious disappearance last month, saying the ordeal has left her suffering from unresolved grief.
Debbie Malthus said from her home in Dawson Creek, B.C., that there are many unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance of Joseph Andrews from a busy B.C. campground.
"I've been going through a whole range of emotions. But I can't go through any stage of acceptance yet, because we don't know what happened."

Ms. Malthus and her husband, David, have been Joseph's foster parents for four years. Their foster son was last seen riding an inner tube on the shallow Salmon River on the afternoon of Aug. 4.
"It's been very difficult for all of us -- the waiting and the not knowing anything. My hope is that police will be able to find out what's happened to him," she said.

RCMP investigators had speculated that the boy had an accident while tubing or playing in the river, but now they are reviewing other possibilities, including abduction. Officers are seeking witnesses who may have seen him enter a car or spotted him anywhere in British Columbia, and they are hoping for Crime Stoppers phone tips.
Ms. Malthus said she is not sure what to think from day to day, but she often fears that the boy was abducted. "Joseph had an outgoing personality, and he was very accepting of everyone. He was very spontaneous and usually very happy and loving everybody."
The missing-person case has been complicated by the roles of social workers and Joseph's birth parents, she said, explaining that provincial privacy rules for foster care prevented her from issuing pleas to the public last month for help in finding the boy.
Ms. Malthus expressed reluctance to go public with her worries and frustrations, citing the need to uphold the confidentiality rules.
But she said that soon after Joseph vanished, his birth mother travelled to the Salmon River Valley campground, about 25 kilometres north of Prince George, B.C., to join an emotional vigil.

The day Joseph disappeared, the Malthuses had attended a family reunion at the campsite. Shortly before he went missing, Joseph was seen on his rubber tube. He was wearing a life jacket.
"You always hope for the best," Ms. Malthus said. "You always hope that maybe somebody is taking good care of him, but you don't know how realistic that is."

"No one was coming to them with information, so the RCMP decided to go looking for any evidence they could find in connection with the disappearance of a boy north of Prince George last summer.
RCMP conducted an air search Saturday of the area where Joseph Andrews went missing while tubing on the Salmon River August 4. It was followed up with a ground search by about 25 Provincial Emergency Program personnel Sunday.
The RCMP helicopter happened to be in town over the weekend, and the PEP searchers had a training exercise scheduled. Those factors, as well as warm weather and lack of foliage, prompted the searchers to comb the area one more time where the 10-year-old Dawson Creek boy went missing.
The search proved fruitless, however, with no new clues being found.
The disappearance of Andrews has baffled police since it was first reported. In contrast to the high profile disappearance of treeplanter Nicole Hoar, there were virtually no clues into the little boy’s disappearance.
“We have not found a single shred of physical evidence from his person from that day,” said RCMP Constable Mike Herchuk.
He was last seen wearing a dark shirt, navy blue knee-length shorts, a yellow ball cap, an orange life jacket and was riding a bright yellow rafting tube with a 20-foot yellow rope attached.
No trace of his clothes or the tube was ever found. A footprint found on a downstream island was also not conclusively linked to Andrews, said Herchuk.
Police have received no Crimestoppers tips nor any anonymous phone calls, and interviews with potential witnesses have all led nowhere, he added.
“As it stands right now, it remains a missing persons case. We don’t have any evidence at this time to believe there was any criminal connection.”
