Correlation doesn't always mean causation. A lot of people can catch religion whilst in jail. In a nation where most are religious it can influence all kinds of things if an inmate becomes religious.

My cousin was murdered in 2009, in Okeechobee, Florida by Dale Middleton. He knocked on her door and asked for money. she didnt have any, so he punched her in the face, walked in, pulled a knife and started stabbing. She fought all the way to her bedroom where he slit her throat three times, one being so deep, he knicked her vertabrae. Yes, studies. Like the ones that show the death penalty doesn't stop some people from murdering. Obviously.
