Robert Charles Towery Executed March 8, 2012 at 11:26 a.m. by Lethal Injection in Arizona ![]() Victim: Mark Jones, 69 Crime: Towery and accomplice Randy Barker went to the home of Mark Jones to rob him. Jones knew Towery, and let Towery and Barker into the home. Towery pulled a pistol on Jones, and Barker handcuffed him. Towery took valuables from the house and loaded them into Jones' vehicle. Barker took Jones to the bedroom. Towery told Jones that he was going to give him injections with something that would make him sleep. Towery then injected Jones with battery acid. Jones was not struggling because he trusted Towery. Towery then sought to strangle Jones to death. When the first try failed, he tried again and succeeded. Towery and Barker then left in Jones' car, unloaded Jones' property at their home, and left the car in a nearby parking lot. On September 5, 1991, Jones' body was discovered. On September 12, 1993, Jones' car was recovered. As a result of a tip given to the silent witness program, Towery and Barker were later arrested. Some of Jones' property was recovered from Towery's and Barker's homes. Citations: State v. Moorman, 186 Ariz. 168, 920 P.2d 29 (Ariz. 1996). Timothy Shaun Stemple Executed March 15, 2012 06:11 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Oklahoma ![]() Victim: Trisha Jane Ruddick Stemple, 30 Crime: The body of 30 year old Trisha Stemple was found along a Tulsa highway the day after her husband, Timothy stemple reported her missing. She died from blunt force head trauma and had fractures to her arm, ribs, pelvis, vertebrae and skull. Her car was parked nearby with its hood raised to make it appear she had been attacked after her vehicle was disabled by a flat tire. But trial evidence revealed the tire had been deliberately punctured with a drill. At the time Stemple was having an affair with another woman, whose 16 year old nephew assisted in the murder on the promise by Stemple that he would collect part of $1 million in insurance proceeds. Accomplice Terry Hunt pled guilty and received a life sentence after testifying that he struck the woman with a bat twice and her husband hit her in the back of the head about 20 to 30 times. stemple then tried to drive over her head with the pickup truck. Despite the injuries, she managed to drag herself onto grass along the highway after they drove away. Larry Matthew Puckett Executed March 20, 2012 06:18 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Mississippi ![]() Victim: Rhonda Hatten Griffis, 28 Crime: On Oct. 14, 1995, Griffis' mother heard a scream and a thud come from her daughter's house next door and found Puckett inside the mobile home holding a club. Puckett allegedly went after the mother with the club, but Griffis' husband, David, had just arrived and Puckett fled after a struggle. The husband found his wife’s bloody and battered body in the living room when he went to get a gun. She was wearing a shirt but the only clothing on her lower body was around her left foot. Her injuries included trauma and gashes on her head, back, chest and neck. She was also bleeding from her genital area. David allegedly recognized Puckett because Puckett had worked for him in the past. Puckett, who was about 18 at the time, was captured two days later. He confessed to being at the Griffis' home to burglarize it, but he claimed Griffis' husband killed her. Citations: Rivas v. Thaler, 432 Fed.Appx. 395 (5th Cir. 2011). What I find interesting and wanted to point out: We already had ten executions this year and NONE of the condemned was black. Just saying, because people always talk about the majority of people getting the needle being black. |

William Gerald Mitchell Executed March 22, 2012 06:20 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Mississippi ![]() Victim: Patty Milliken, 38 Crime: On Nov. 21, 1995, Mitchell had been seen visiting Milliken several times at the Biloxi Majik Mart, where she worked. Toward the end of her shift, she stepped outside with Mitchell to smoke a cigarette, leaving her personal items behind. She never returned. Her body was found under a bridge the next morning. She had been raped, strangled, beaten, mutilated and crushed by a car. Milliken’s blood and hair were found on and under Mitchell’s car. At the time of the murder, he was out serving parole on a life sentence for the 1974 murder of Irene Edwards, also in Harrison County. Then a student at Mississippi Valley State University, Mitchell went home for the weekend, and while there, on February 22, 1974, he stabbed Edwards to death using two butcher knives. Citations: None yet.
