Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

OK, they're rather slow with the uploads these days. I'll post Brewer and Davis as soon as they're up.

Who I got already is Mr Woods of Texas:

Steven Michael Woods Jr.

Executed September 13, 2011 06:22 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Texas

Victims:

Crime:

In the early morning, two men driving on a golf course road in a Dallas suburb discovered two victims lying beside a car. Ron Whitehead, 21, had been shot in the head six times and his neck was cut four times. Bethena Brosz, 19, was shot twice in the head, once in the knee, and her throat was also cut. Whitehead was dead. Brosz was alive and given medical treatment, but died the next day. Woods admitted to police that he was with the victims the night before their bodies were found, stating that he and Marcus Rhodes had agreed to lead Whitehead and Brosz to a house nearby, but that their two vehicles became separated during the trip. Detectives then interviewed Rhodes, and after a search of his car revealed a backpack and personal items belonging to Whitehead and Brosz, Rhodes was arrested. The murder weapons were found at the home of Rhodes' parents. A latex glove carrying Woods' DNA was found in Rhodes' car after the killings. Woods left the Dallas area, traveling to New Orleans, Idaho and California, where he was finally arrested. Several witnesses testified that before the killings he told them about his plan to commit the murders, and after the killings, he told them about his participation in them. Witnesses testified at Woods' 2002 trial that he lured Whitehead to the isolated road on the pretense of a drug deal and killed him because he knew about another killing involving Woods two months earlier in California, athough Woods' was never charged in connection with this crime. Prosecutors said Brosz merely was at the wrong place at the wrong time and was killed because she was a witness to Whitehead's death.

Accomplice Marcus Scott Rhodes was also charged with capital murder. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

Woods v. Thaler, 399 Fed.Appx. 884 (5th Cir. 2010). (Federal Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Bacon; a large pizza with bacon, sausage, pepperoni and hamburger; fried chicken breasts; chicken fried steak; hamburgers with bacon on French toast; garlic bread sticks; Mountain Dew, Pepsi, root beer and sweet tea; and ice cream.

Last Words:

"You're not about to witness an execution; you're about to witness a murder. I've never killed anybody, never. This whole thing is wrong ... Warden, if you're going to murder someone, go ahead and do it. Pull that trigger. Goodbye."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Here we go:

Lawrence Russell Brewer

Executed September 21, 2011 06:21 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Texas

Victim:

Crime:

Brewer and John King were passengers in a truck driven by Shawn Berry. At 1:30 a.m. on June 7, 1998, the men, all white, offered a ride to James Byrd, Jr, a black man. Byrd was walking home from a party. The men drove to a country road outside of Jasper, Texas. As they stood by the truck smoking, the three men attacked Byrd, tied his feet with a chain, and dragged him behind the truck, eventually decapitating him. The men left Byrd’s body on the road. King and Brewer had been involved in racist groups while they were in prison together, and King had prepared materials to start a racist organization in Jasper. Shortly after being released from prison, Brewer had accepted King’s offer to visit him in Jasper. Some of King’s materials were found among Brewer’s possessions. The prosecution argued that King intended the killing to be a signal that his racist organization was up and running. Brewer admitted to participating in the attack on Byrd, but testified that he did not join in the dragging and in fact tried to stop it. He also testified that Berry had cut Byrd’s throat before the dragging began.

Final/Special Meal:

Brewer requested a number of items, including chicken-fried steak and Bluebell ice cream, and then declined them all, saying he wasn't hungry.

Troy Anthony Davis

Executed September 21, 2011 11:08 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Georgia

Victim:

Savannah PD Officer Marc Allen MacPhail

Crime:

Troy Anthony Davis was at a Burger King restaurant with friends and and struck a homeless man named Larry Young in the head with a pistol when Young refused to give a beer to one of Davis's friends. Savannah police officer Mark Allen MacPhail, who was working an off-duty security detail at the Greyhound bus terminal next door, heard Young cry out and responded to the disturbance. Davis fled and Officer MacPhail, wearing his full police uniform, ordered him to stop. Davis turned and shot the officer in the right thigh and chest. Although Officer MacPhail was wearing a bullet-proof vest, his sides were not protected and the bullet entered the left side of his chest. Davis, smiling, walked up to the stricken officer and shot him in the face as he lay dying in the parking lot.

Davis v. Terry, 465 F.3d 1249 (11th Cir. 2006). (Federal Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Declined.

Final Words:

"I'd like to address the MacPhail family. Let you know, despite the situation you are in, I'm not the one who personally killed your son, your father, your brother. I am innocent. The incident that happened that night is not my fault. I did not have a gun. All I can ask ... is that you look deeper into this case so that you really can finally see the truth. I ask my family and friends to continue to fight this fight. For those about to take my life, God have mercy on your souls. And may God bless your souls."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Texas drops special last meal for death row inmates.
Lawrence Russell Brewer, who was executed in Texas on Wednesday, ordered a huge last meal but did not eat it.
The hefty last meal ordered but not eaten by an executed Texas inmate brought a complaint from a state senator and the end Thursday to the practice of special menus.
Hahahahahahaha...about time. Go Texas!

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Derrick O'Neal Mason

Executed September 22, 2011 06:49 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Alabama

Victim:

Crime:

25-year-old Angela Cagle worked as a clerk in a Huntsville convenience store. Mason entered the store in the early morning, directing Cagle to a backroom at gunpoint. According to Mason, he was trying to force her to tell him how to turn off the camera when he ordered her to take her clothes off. He then shot her in the face twice with a handgun. Mason claimed the first shot just went off, and the second shot was to keep her from identifying him. He then opened the cash register and fled. A few days after the murder, an unidentified man later told police that Mason committed the crime. The informant described the gun used, told police that Mason was "out of control" and "trying to make a name for himself," and then led authorities to Mason's car. Inside, police found a gun later determined to be the murder weapon. After he was arrested, Mason confessed to committing the murder. The jury voted 10-2 to sentence him to death, a recommendation the trial court accepted.

Citations:

Mason v. State, 768 So.2d 981 (Ala.Crim.App. 1998). (Direct Appeal)
Ex parte Mason,768 So.2d 1008 (Ala. 2000). (Direct Appeal)
Mason v. Allen, 605 F.3d 1114 (11th Cir. 2010). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Declined.

Final Words:

Mason apologized to the victim's family for the "hurt and pain" he caused, and thanked the victim's father for getting in touch years ago and granting him his forgiveness.
