Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Lee Andrew Taylor

Executed June 16, 2011 06:24 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Texas

Crime:

At 16, Taylor was convicted of a 1995 aggravated robbery that resulted in the death of an elderly man. While serving a life sentence at the Telford State Prison in New Boston, Taylor became a member of the Aryan Brotherhood. Another inmate, Daniel Richbourg, had property stolen from his cell and it was suspected that inmate Donta Greene participated in the theft. Taylor and Richbourg made plans to seek revenge. The next morning, the inmates were released from their cells to go to breakfast. Taylor walked just past Greene, then turned and struck Greene with his fist. Taylor then grabbed Greene around the head, held him in a headlock, and repeatedly stabbed him in the chest with a rod-like shank, a prison-made stabbing device that resembled an ice pick. Afterwards, Taylor shouted at Greene, “That’s what you get for stealing." During the stabbing, Richbourg brandished his own shank, to chase away other inmates attempting to help Greene, who was unarmed. After the stabbing, Taylor was euphoric and repeatedly bragged that he must have stabbed Greene twenty-five to thirty times. He later claimed self defense. Accomplice Richbourg was serving a 12-year sentence for Burglary. He was also convicted in the murder of Greene and was sentenced to 48-years imprisonment.

Citations:

Taylor v. Thaler,397 Fed.Appx. 104 (5th Cir. 2010). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

A medium pizza with cheese, beef, black olives and mushrooms, four soft tacos, large bowls of fried okra and one pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream.

Last Words:

"There are 300 people on death row, and not every one of them is a monster. The state of Texas is carrying out a very inhuman and unjust situation. It's not right to kill anybody, not the way I did it, or the way it's being done to me. Everyone changes, right? Life is about experience, and people change." The condemned man then looked to the victim's family. "For all you people," I defended myself when I killed your family member. Prison is a bad place. I didn't set out to kill him. But he would not have been in prison if he was a saint. I hope y'all understand that. I hope you don’t find satisfaction in this, watching a human being die.” While Taylor continued talking to the victim's family, the lethal injection was started. As the drug was taking effect, he said, "I'm ready to teleport".

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Eddie Duvall Powell III

Executed June 16, 2011 06:30 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Alabama

Victim:

Crime:

Before sunrise, 70-year-old Mattie Wesson was brutally attacked, raped, sodomized and shot to death in her home. After the shooting and assualt took place in the bedroom of her home, Mattie was able to walk across the street to the front yard of her neighbor and before collapsing told her that a black man had raped and shot her. Shortly after making this statement, Mattie Wesson died. Powell and a friend, Bobby Johnson, lived in a home across the street from Mattie Wesson. Powell borrowed Johnson's leather jacket and left the Johnson home in the early hours on the day of the murder. Powell denied knowing anything about the murder, but the physical evidence told a different story. Powell's semen was found in the victim's mouth, rectum, and vagina. Mattie Wesson's blood was found on Powell's pants and on Bobby Johnson's leather jacket. Powell's handprint was found on the window on the front of the victim's home, where a screen had been cut. Powell had a handgun after he arrived at the residence of Jason Long, which was about daybreak and asked him to get rid of the handgun. Jason Long complied with this request, and the handgun was never found. Long testified that Powell told him on the day of the murder that he did the bitch, she ran up on him and he shot her. Powell had previously been arrested numerous times for robbery, burglary and assault.

Citations:

Powell v. State, 796 So.2d 404 (Ala. 1999). (Direct Appeal)
Ex parte Powell, 796 So.2d 434 (Ala. 2001). (Direct Appeal)
Powell v. Allen, 602 F.3d 1263 (11th Cir. 2010). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Powell did not request a special last meal. He ate sandwiches, soda and corn chips from a vending machine.

Final Words:

"I'd like to say I'm sorry for the pain I have caused everyone who has had to deal with this situation - my family, the victim's family and everyone in this state. I've made peace with myself and God, and hope that everyone can move on from this situation."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

This one even arose some media attention over here in Europe. Papers claimed this guy was retarded, mentally challenged or whatever and should not be put to death due to a Supreme Court decision.

Milton Wuzael Mathis

Executed June 21, 2011 06:53 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Texas

Crime:

Six people were in a well known drug house in Fort Bend County. At 8:30 a.m. Mathis pulled a handgun and shot Travis Brown in the head. After herding the others in the same room he then calmly shot 15 year old Melanie Almaguer in the head, then shot Daniel Hibbard. Next, he pointed the gun at Melanie's mother and pulled the trigger, but the gun was out of bullets. Mathis then rummaged through the house, set fire to Brown's room, threatened the others and left in Brown's car. Almaguer survived the shooting, but was permanently paralyzed from the neck down. Brown and Hibbard died. Testimony from the others in the home identified Mathis as the shooter. Mathis persuaded his girlfriend to give him an alibi, which she maintained until confronted by police. A fellow inmate testified that Mathis showed no remorse for the shootings and stated that he wished he had killed all of them. At trial, Mathis took the stand and at first denied being at the house. After defense counsel requested a recess, Mathis took the stand and stated that he had lied and admitted that he had shot all three people and taken Brown’s car. Mathis claimed he shot Brown in self-defense after Brown had threatened to shoot him. He claimed that he shot the others because he panicked.

Citations:

Mathis v. State,67 S.W.3d 918 (Tex.Crim.App. 2002). (Direct Appeal)
Mathis v. Dretke, 124 Fed.Appx. 865 (5th Cir. 2005). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Five Texas burgers all the way with bacon, five fried pork chops, five pieces of fried chicken, five pieces of fried fish, an order of chili cheese fries with a whole jalapeno, an order of regular fries and an extra large gallon of fruit punch.

Last Words:

"I never meant to hurt you," Mathis said to his surviving paralyzed victim, Melanie Almaguerer. "You were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I am not asking for your forgiveness. All I have to worry about is God forgiving me. I hope you get better. To the doctors, make sure you take care of her." He also thanked his friends and relatives, and asked for mercy for himself and "these people carrying out this mass slaughter. The system has failed me. This is what you call a miscarriage of justice. Life is not supposed to end this way ... I just ask the Lord, when I knock at the gates, you just let me in."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

WTF is an "Extra large gallon of fruit punch"? Thats worse than someone asking me if I have an extra smoke they can have... "Nope, Camel only put 20 cigs in this pack as well, no extra's this time."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Roy Willard Blankenship

Executed June 23, 2011 08:37 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Georgia

Crime:

In the early morning hours Blankenship left a bar after a night of drinking and began to walk home. As he walked past the victim's upstairs apartment, he decided that he wanted to break in. The victim, Sarah Mims Bowen, was a 78-year-old woman for whom Blankenship had done repair work. He climbed up a railing to a porch of her apartment where he kicked out the lower pane of a window. After waiting and watching briefly, he entered the apartment, and grabbed Sarah from behind. Sarah struggled and fell and Blankenship fell on top of her. Sarah became unconscious, and Blankenship picked her up and took her back to her bed, where he raped her. Her bloody and nude body was discovered by friends and neighbors She had been severely beaten, scratched, bitten and forcibly raped. A plastic bottle of hand lotion had been forced into her vagina. Footprints left by an unusually patterned sole were found at the scene and led toward Blankenship's house. His fingerprints were also found at the scene, and shoes identical to the type that made the prints were recovered from his possession. After he was arrested by police, Blankenship made a confession. However, he denied that he beat Sarah Bowen severely, and at trial he recanted part of his confession and stated that he was unable to consummate the rape. Forensic evidence established that Sarah Bowen died from heart failure brought on by the trauma. Scrapings taken from the fingernails of the victim matched the blood type of Blankenship. The death sentence was imposed three separate times after two reversals.

Blankenship v. Hall, 542 F.3d 1253 (11th Cir. 2008). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Blankenship declined to request a special last meal and instead will be offered the institution's meal tray, consisting of chicken and rice, peas, carrots, collard greens, corn bread, a brownie and iced tea.

Final Words:

"I hope to see you again."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

IMHO i dunno why the feed them one last meal, if they are to be executed.... i mean in all reality that food goes to waste rather soon, when it could go to some one else who needs it, where as the prisoner is gonna die anyways.

sounds a bit heartless of me i'm sure, but feeding em in prison, ok has to happen, but a last meal request before death just seems rather silly when in reality it's not fully needed.
