Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Daniel Lee Bedford

Executed May 17, 2011 11:18 a.m. by Lethal Injection in Ohio

Crime:

Bedford and Gwen Toepfert were involved in a relationship, but by 1984 were estranged. Bedford’s feelings for Gwen remained, however, prompting him to try to “rekindle our prior romance.” He visited her apartment bearing a gift and hoping to make amends, only to learn that Gwen’s new boyfriend, John Smith, was already there. Three days later, he tried again. He telephoned Gwen’s apartment, only to learn from her roommate, Jo Ann, that Gwen was asleep and that Smith was with her. At around 2:30 a.m. Jo Ann woke to the sounds of “gunshots and screams.” Apparently overcome by Gwen’s rejection, Bedford entered her apartment armed with a .38 revolver and a shotgun, shot John Smith after a brief struggle and then shot Gwen. During the melee, Gwen ran into Funk’s bedroom, screaming that she had been shot. Bedford found her there and shot her again with the shotgun. John and Gwen both died from the gunshots. Bedford fled to Tennessee, where he was arrested and gave a confession.

Citations:

State v. Bedford, 39 Ohio St.3d 122, 529 N.E.2d 913 (Ohio 1988). (Direct Appeal)
Bedford v. Collins, 567 F.3d 225 (6th Cir. 2009). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:
Bedford did not request a special meal, but had the regularly scheduled prison meal of an orange, graham crackers, turnip greens, oven-brown potatoes and wheat bread. He received a two-liter bottle of cola as a special request.

Final Words:

"I love you, Shell. Love you all. God bless you."

Rodney Gray

Executed May 17, 2011 at 6:12 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Mississippi

Crime:

79-year-old Grace Blackwell drove to the drive-through teller window of her bank in Jasper County. She presented a blank check and asked the teller to fill the check out in the amount of $1200. The teller's view of the car's back seat was blocked by hanging clothes. The teller testified that after giving her the money, she heard Blackwell say, "I'm hurrying, I'm hurrying." The teller notified the police, and they went to Blackwell’s home only to find the front door open and the phone disconnected. Witnesses testified that they saw Blackwell's car later being driven by a young black male, and one witness identified the driver as Rodney Gray. Police found Blackwell's body at the end of a bridge in Newton County at 1:40 p.m. Her car was found elsewhere in Newton County. Investigators determined that Blackwell had been killed by a shotgun blast to the mouth. Later, an autopsy revealed that Blackwell had also been raped and that her body had been run over by a car.

Investigators questioned and arrested Rodney Gray that same day. While in jail, Gray phoned his girlfriend, Mildred Curry, to tell her that he had hidden money in a bathroom vent. A search of Curry's trailer turned up $1,123 hidden in the bathroom air duct. The bloody clothes and boots which Gray had been wearing on the day of the murder were found in a bucket behind Curry's trailer. DNA of the semen found on Blackwell had less than a 1-in-446 million chance of coming from someone other than Gray, according to FBI experts.

Gray v. State, 887 So.2d 158 (Miss. 2004). (PCR)
Gray v. Epps, 616 F.3d 436 (5th Cir. 2010). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

None.

Final Words:

None.

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Jason Oric Williams

Executed May 19, 2011 06:19 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Alabama

Crime:

After a night of bar hopping and injesting crack cocaine, LSD, and alcohol, at 6:00 a.m. Williams returned to the Paravicini trailer in Irvington where he had been temporarily living with the family. After talking to his estranged wife on the phone, Williams grabbed a .22-caliber rifle and shot Gerald Paravicini. He then beat Paravicini's wife with the gun and shot her 16-year-old son in the face. He then walked to a neighbor's house about 200 yards away and gunned down Linda Barber, who was getting ready for work at the U.S. Postal Service, and Freddie Barber, who was drinking coffee in the kitchen. He walked into a bedroom and shot the couple's 22-year-old son Bryan as he slept. A younger brother, 16-year-old Brad, was shot in the hand before he ran away. Williams stole the family van, cash and credit cards and fled the scene. He was apprehended in Mississippi, telling law enforcement that he had thrown the rifle over a bridge and that he did not remember the shootings.

Citations:

Ex parte Williams, 710 So.2d 1350 (Ala. 1997). (Direct Appeal)
Williams v. Allen, 598 F.3d 778 (11th Cir. 2010). (Habeas)

Final/Special Meal:

Williams made no special request for a final meal from the prison. He ate chicken wings and sandwiches that his family bought from vending machines

Final Words:

"I hope that the families of the victims forgive me for what I've done."

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

yes.and it is also inhumane that people rape and kill small children. why should they get to live when they destroy the lives of so many other people? think of the parents of raped and murdered children. i watch a lot of prison shows.most of the people have no remorse for what they have done and said they would kill again if they were let out.you should think before you post ignorant bullshit about the death penalty being inhumane

Re: 2011 Executions in the USA

Donald Edward Beaty

Executed May 25, 2011 at 7:38 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Arizona

Victim:

Crime:

13 year old Christy Ann Fornoff disappeared while collecting money on her newspaper-delivery route at a Tempe apartment complex. Within hours, police were combing the complex with canine units as Fornoff's parents and neighbors knocked on doors. Two days later, Beaty, the complex's maintenance man, was seen standing over Fornoff's body, which had been wrapped in a sheet and laid next to a garbage bin. Beaty told the man who saw him that he had just found the body and had already called police. In fact, he had not called police. Physical evidence linked Beaty to the crime. Fornoff's vomit was found in his closet, along with hairs that matched hairs found on the body. Beaty's first trial ended in a hung jury, but after prosecutors learned that Beaty confessed the murder to a jail psychiatrist, they obtained an order compelling the testimony. On the stand, the psychiatrist testified that Beaty had told him that he had not intended to kill the girl, but had put his hand over her mouth to muffle her screams and she suffocated on her own vomit. Beaty was found guilty and sentenced to death.

Citations:

State v. Beaty, 158 Ariz. 232, 762 P.2d 519 (Ariz. 1988). (Direct Appeal)
Beaty v. Schriro, 509 F.3d 994 (9th Cir. 2007). (Habeas)

Final / Special Meal:

A beef chimichanga with salsa and guacamole, a double cheeseburger with all the fixings, fries, 14 ounces of rocky road ice cream, and a Diet Pepsi.

Final Words:

"I just want to say to the Fornoff family, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. God will let you see her again. Freddy, I love you, I kept my promise. Thank you for being here for me."

[B][U]
He was supposed to be executed at 10 AM but was granted a stay on his execution due to a switch in execution drugs. His lawyer filled an appeal for cruel and unusual punishment. It took a judge only 40 minutes to decide that he was in fact going to die on the same day. Judge reportedly said something to the effect of "Cruel and unusual punishment is making the victims family go one more day without justice being served." or something like that.
