Re: 2011 Executions in the USA
Cary D. Kerr Executed May 3, 2011 06:19 p.m. CDT by Lethal Injection in Texas ![]() Victim: ![]() Crime: Kerr was socializing with Pamela Horton and her friend Jennifer York at a Fort Worth nightclub. Horton described Kerr as a "nice guy" and lived in the same trailer park. Later, an intoxicated Horton told York she was ready to go and needed a ride home, but York was not yet ready to leave. Kerr took Horton outside, then returned briefly and whispered to another girl "I'm taking this drunk bitch home and I'll be right back." Kerr then took Horton to his home, where he raped and strangled her with his hands. He then put her body in his car. After driving around a little, he pushed her body out of the car. At 2 a.m., a taxi driver spotted Horton's body lying in the street, and paramedics arrived to assist. After the paramedics wrapped the body, Kerr approached them and told them he was the one who found the body. Police then arrived and noticed a purse in Kerr's car. Kerr stated "If that's the girl I picked up, maybe it's hers." He retrieved the purse from his car and gave it to the officers. In it, they found a plastic hair clip with teeth broken off. They also found a long strand of blonde hair on Kerr's face which was recovered. A search of Kerr's home yielded a torn bra, panties, and a plastic tooth that matched the broken hair clip. An autopsy of the victim showed death by strangulation and a blood alcohol concentration at the time of the autopsy of 0.465. DNA testing showed that the semen in the victim's mouth matched Kerr's DNA. The bra and panties found in Kerr's apartment contained DNA matching the victim. Citations: Kerr v. Thaler, 384 Fed.Appx. 400 (5th Cir.) (Habeas) Final/Special Meal: Pizza, fried chicken, baked chicken, lasagna, tacos, pork ribs with picante sauce, cheeseburger, quiche with meat, cheese and broccoli, and ice cream. Last Words: "To the state of Texas: I'm an innocent man. Never trust a court-appointed attorney." Kerr then asked his friends to search for the person who he claimed committed the crime. "Check that DNA, Check Scott. Here we go. Lord Jesus. Jesus." |

Jeffrey Motts Executed May 6, 2011 6:17 p.m. by Lethal Injection in South Carolina ![]() Crime: Motts and Charles "Chuck" Martin had ended up in the same cell at Perry Correctional Institution together despite asking to be kept apart because of a dispute over a stolen radio and a shank found in another inmate's cell. After an early morning argument, Motts said he went into a rage, knocked his cellmate unconscious and tied him up. When Martin came to, begging for his life, Motts said he choked him for five minutes. When the cell doors opened for breakfast, Motts smoked a cigarette, ate, then came back to his cell, dragged Martin's body to a common area and kicked him in the head, saying "this is what snitches get." He confessed to strangling Martin just hours after telling guards at Perry Correctional Institution in Greenville County where to find his body in a prison common area. During that confession, he also asked investigators to tell prosecutors he was serving two life sentences and a third wasn't going to make a difference. Soon after his conviction, Motts waived all appeals and asked to be put to death. Motts was already serving a life sentence for a 1995 double murder of 79-year-old Clyde Camby and his 73-year-old great-aunt Etta Osteen. Martin was three weeks away from completing a five-year sentence for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and trespassing. Citations: State v. Motts, --- S.E.2d ----, 2011 WL 979731 (S.C. 2011). (Waiver of Appeals) Final Meal: Pizza, fried fish, popcorn shrimp, french fries, sweet tea and cherry cheesecake. Final Words: His attorney read a last statement from Motts as he lay on the gurney. "To my mom and grandma, Happy Mother's Day. I know this is a sad one but let us remember the good times. I am finally free and at peace in heaven." He apologized to his victims' families, his own family and anyone he hurt along the way. “I want to warn kids of the dangers of drugs. I was the child everyone wanted their children around until I got on drugs. Drugs will destroy your life.” |

Benny Joe Stevens Executed May 10, 2011 at 6:22 p.m. by Lethal Injection in Mississippi ![]() Crime: Glenda and Benny Joe Stevens divorced when their daughter, Erica, was three years old. Glenda later married Wesley Reid, and they lived together with Erica and Glenda's son, Dylan Lee. Benny Joe Stevens married Lauren Stevens in 1993. At trial, Lauren Stevens testified that her husband was expecting a workers' compensation settlement from a back injury claim and that he anticipated he would have to pay back child support from the settlement check. On the day of the murders, she saw her husband with his gun belt laid out on the bed and putting shotgun shells in the gun belt. Lauren remembered seeing his .357 handgun. Stevens then took his guns and left the home in his truck. Glenda (38), Wesley (38), Dylan (11), his friend Heath (10) and Erica were all at their trailer when Stevens pulled up in his truck. Wesley opened the sliding glass back door and called, "Benny Joe, can I help you?" Erica then heard a gunshot and heard Wesley scream. Erica tried to rescue her brother Dylan and his frind, but Stevens shot her in the back. She then hid in the bath and watched helplessly as her mother was shot by Stevens. She then heard him say, "Bitch, I told you that I'd kill you one of these days." Erica climbed through a window and heard more gunshots while she was running away from the trailer. Erica went to a neighbor's house for help and collapsed at the door. Erica told the neighbors that her father had shot her mother, stepfather, brother and friend. Stevens returned to his home where his wife inquired, "What did you do?" to which Stevens replied, "I just killed a family." Citations: Stevens v. State, 806 So.2d 1031 (Miss. 2001).
